Twitter has been jam-packed with congratulatory wishes since defenceman Jacob Trouba has been announced as the captain of the New York Rangers on Tuesday. The 28-year-old has become the Rangers’ first captain since defenceman Ryan McDonagh, who got traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning on February 26, 2018. He is being celebrated as the 28th team captain in history. Different members of the team also jumped into the opportunity to wish him for his grand promotion.
Trouba commented, “It’s a huge honor, and it’s something that means something, especially here in this organization, with its history and past players who were captains before me”. “As a kid, I grew up watching Leetch and Messier, Drury and Jagr. Those names were all prominent to me as a kid and then you come here and learn about the history of the guys before them. You see pictures, you see jerseys of this place and it’s now my turn to carry that legacy on for those guys.”
“Congrats Troubs” – Twitter applauded Jacob Trouba for his accomplishments
Winger and alternate captain, Chris Kreider said, “Congrats, Troubs”. “So happy for you, buddy. You’ve been doing the job for a while now so it’s nice to see you get the letter sewn on your jersey. You’ve been a leader on the ice, a leader off the ice, and a leader in the community”, as per nhl.com.
Coach Gerard Gallant said that this “is what our team thinks”. He further stated that Trouba never missed any team meeting during the 2021-22 season and recorded a score of 39 points in 81 games. Center Mika Zibanejad said, “Hey, ‘Troubs.’ I just wanted to congratulate you on this big honor”. “It’s a great choice. I’m super excited for you, for us as a team and I’m really looking forward to next year.”
I'll say this about Jacob Trouba:
-He was one of the few players in the NHL to support Black Lives Matter in 2020.
-He was one of the few players in the NHL to support Luke Prokop when he came out.
He's gonna be a good leader.

** BREAKING NEWS ** 🚨 🗞
I am being told that new New York Rangers captain Jacob Trouba WILL NOT have the captain "C" patch sewn on the chest of his jersey
He will have it put on his elbow instead

With #NYR down 3-1 in their first-round playoff series in May, Jacob Trouba walked into the postgame meal room and said, "Meeting room in 10 minutes."
What was said in that room wasn't divulged. But it was evident in today's decision to name him Captain.

On the other hand, winger Artemi Panarin commented, “Jacob, Jacob! Congratulations, buddy. Happy for you, but I still think I’m the better choice”. In a letter to NY, Jacob Trouba noted that he will do his best to give his all to the team and the city. Finally, Trouba stated, “I know I’m ready for this”. “There will be challenges. We will face adversity, but I will give you all I have. Our goal is to bring a Stanley Cup to this city. And while I can’t promise it, I can promise I’ll give you my entire heart trying.”

Jacob Trouba would have been #NYR captain a year ago without the GM change, and nearly was still named captain last September.
As one teammate told me earlier this year: “If it’s him, 99.9% of the locker room would endorse that move.”
