Blue Eye Samurai’s Taigen’s Goals Changing May Have been Out of Character but They Made Perfect Sense

Blue Eye Samurai is a story revolving around 17th-century Japan, better known as the Edo period. However, the story doesn’t delve deep into topics like politics; it instead leans more towards action-adventure.

Blue Eye Samurai does an excellent job of blending the Western genre with Eastern culture. The animation and fight sequences are worth praising. However, fans have been quite intrigued regarding this one aspect of the story, which is Taigen’s perspective shift towards the end of the story.

What happens at the end of Blue Eye Samurai?

The plot of Blue Eye Samurai depends on Mizu’s quest to find Fowler. Her closest comrade happens to be an apprentice, Ringo, who dwells to search for purpose in his life. A revelation occurs regarding her next closest companion. In the early episodes, Taigen is shown as a bully but starts to develop mutual respect for Mizu. He becomes aware of Mizu’s messed-up intentions as well.

She learns from her prior mistakes and joins Taigen in his quest to find and save Princess Akemi. Mizu successfully achieves her goal, winning back Ringo and Taigen’s respect. As the opportunity to kill Fowler stands in front of her, the latter persuades her not to kill. He reveals the fact that he is aware of the other two Westerners hiding out in London, who are responsible for Mizu’s grief. Mizu locks up Fowler and accompanies him on a ship bound for London.

A very intriguing tool for narrative is the technique of shifting perspectives. When audiences first see a well-developed Taigen, it is clear that he’s a skilled and respected samurai in his dojo. He is portrayed to be driven by arrogance and motivated by the belief that winning approval from Princess Akemi’s family will bring him happiness.

Taigen reunites with Princess Akemi after escaping the burning city of Edo. While he was away from Akemi, there was a significant change in his perspective. It was shown that he no longer prioritizes status or others’ opinions. He expresses his desire to lead a simple life and extends his hand to Princess Akemi for a humble life together. Taigen’s drastic change is prominent despite her eventual rejection. Moreover, this transformation may have created a platform to explore the hinted romantic connection between him and Mizu in potential future seasons.
