PlayStation vs. Xbox is a long-running battle in the gaming fraternity. Sometimes the former edges past with its huge exclusive titles, and sometimes the latter touches the line with its exciting Game Pass library. Amidst this battle, fans are in awe that an Xbox first-party title is right now reigning the charts, in the name of Sea of Thieves.

In February, Microsoft announced that many of their first-party titles would be going cross-platform. To begin this journey, four titles were selected; one of them was the open-world pirate ship adventure title from Rare. Scheduled to be available on April 30, 2024, Sea of Thieves currently sits at the top of the list of best-selling pre-orders on the PlayStation Network in the United States. So, is this the beginning of Xbox’s dominance over their archrival’s arena?

Sea of Thieves is right now the No. 1 most pre-ordered title on the PlayStation network in the United States. But this success doesn’t restrict itself to the United States alone. This game is currently being played in the UK, Germany, and many more.

Despite being an Xbox first-party title, it is right now outpacing highly anticipated titles like MLB The Show 24, Rise of the Ronin, Dragons Dogma II, etc. in terms of pre-ordering. Right now, the version that is at the No. 1 spot is the $60 premium edition. However, the $40 standard edition is not very far behind, as it has claimed the 5th spot on that list.

Since releasing in 2018, Sea of Thieves has garnered over 35 million players across Xbox and PC. The game is in its 11th season, but it is still topping the charts on the PSN Store. This proves how much hype is still left in this game. This huge hype amongst PlayStation fans might make the game get bigger updates in a longer time.

In the all-important podcast held in February, CEO of Microsoft Gaming Phil Spencer announced that four games will be going cross-platform. Along with Sea of Thieves, the other three are Hi-Fi Rush, Pentiment, and Grounded.

However, according to certain rumors and sources, these are just the beginning. People expected Starfield and Indiana Jones to be on other platforms as well, but that didn’t happen. Although Spencer didn’t rule out the possibility of that. According to him:

“I don’t think we should, as an industry, ever rule out a game going to any other platform.”

So, now it’s up to Xbox how they are going to shape up their future on their arch-rival platform, PlayStation. And the huge success of Sea of Thieves is a positive indicator of that future.
