In 2021, a man named Stephen Harper accused Dwight Howard of assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and false imprisonment. According to the lawsuit, Howard allegedly engaged in sexual acts without Harper’s consent.

Harper claimed that he had communicated with the former NBA star on Instagram and eventually met him in person. To support his case, Harper provided text messages and an Uber receipt as evidence that they had met at Howard’s residence. However, the three-time Defensive Player of the Year, Howard, maintains that all the sexual acts that occurred that day were consensual.

Harper disagreed with this account. In his complaint, Harper stated that Howard had brought along a person dressed as a woman named “Kitty.” Harper maintained that he did not want to take part in the sexual activity involving Kitty and Howard but claimed that he was forced into it by the former NBA player.

Defendant stood up (towering over Mr. Harper), grabbed Mr. Harper by the thighs, forcibly removed Mr. Harper’s underwear, held Mr. Harper down, and performed nonconsensual oral sex on Mr. Harper. Mr. Harper was in fear of imminent bodily harm when he was pinned down and forced to remain in place while Defendant continued to sexually assault him.

Sexual allegations against Dwight Howard were eventually dropped

Dwight Howard, through his lawyer, requested the court to dismiss the charges, asserting that he never assaulted Stephen Harper or coerced him into any non-consensual activity. On the “On the Way Up with Angela Yee” podcast, the former LA Lakers center provided an update on the case.

He said:

There was a lawsuit but they threw the case out because it never happened. Why is it coming up now? Have you seen the stuff I've been posting?

He added:

Why at this time? You read the article, right? Two years ago, right? 2021. Why would all of a sudden now some stuff like [an] article about my character what I supposedly allegedly did with this person, and battery and assault? When I see these things, I know it's an attack on my character and where I'm at in life.

In 2019, Howard declared in an interview that he is not gay. However, two years later, he openly acknowledged engaging in consensual sexual acts with two men. Despite the lawsuit being dropped, inquiries about Howard’s sexuality have continued to pique people’s curiosity.
