Rachel Zegler, star of West Side Story, wore custom Christian Dior—though the dress is sheer on its own, Zegler was styled by Sarah Slutsky (according to CheckTheTag) to make the dress look more opaque. The sheer trend, paradoxically, can be made modest(ish). Zegler plays Maria in the reboot of the classic musical, and her princess-y, mostly opaque gown stays more or less in tune with her ingenue brand.

These are by no means the last sheer gowns we'll see this year. The so-called naked dresses push boundaries and play with questions about what is “appropriate.” Celebrities, particularly celebrity women are called on every day to show off their body, they make money from their body, and their bodies receive constant criticism and feedback. Sheer dresses dare to ask: Is there any limit to how much people want to see? They challenge the dated ideas, grounded in misogyny, that women have to walk a fine line between revealing their body and concealing it. “Here I am,” women in sheer dresses seem to say. “I dare you to call me trashy.”
Or maybe the sheer-dress trend is not a commentary at all. It was 82 degrees in Las Vegas on Grammy day. These people were going to be close together, under hot lights. If you're thinking about shaming a woman for reveling “too much” today, maybe get a hobby, but also consider this: None of the celebrities at the 2022 Grammy Awards were in any danger of getting sweaty.
