Formula 1 drivers’ ages: From the oldest to the youngest on the 2023 grid

Formula 1 is a highly competitive sport. 20 of the best drivers race against one another to win the world title. Like athletes in other sports, age also plays a factor in the performance of F1 drivers. Over the years, a heavy influx of younger drivers to the sport has occurred. However, experienced drivers have also remained in F1.

The youngest-ever driver to make an F1 debut was Max Verstappen. The Dutchman raced for the Toro Rosso team for the first time at the age of 17. Later on, Formula 1 changed the super license system to prevent such an occurrence in the future. On the other hand, there is no maximum eligible age for racers to enter F1.

Alonso is the most experienced driver in Formula 1 history. The Spanish driver has competed in a record-breaking 358 races in F1. Fernando Alonso is 41 years old but is convinced he can win the championship for a third time. The Aston Martin driver was born on July 29, 1981. 

Lewis Hamilton – 38 years old

Lewis Hamilton

The British driver first raced in Formula 1 in 2007 and almost won the championship. Lewis Hamilton is one of the old guards of the sport. He was born on January 7, 1985, and is 38 years old. Regarded as one of the greatest drivers in F1 history, Lewis is chasing a record-breaking eighth world championship.

Nico Hulkenberg – 35 years old

The F1 ‘super sub’ returns to the sport with Haas in 2023. He is the only German driver on the 2023 grid and was born on August 19, 1987. Hulkenberg is 35 years old. Nico also holds the record for the most races in Formula 1 without a podium finish. Previously, the 35-year-old performed consistently in the midfield for Force India and Renault.

Valtteri Bottas – 33 years old

The Finnish driver is on a long-term contract at Alfa Romeo. Valtteri Bottas was born on August 28, 1989, and is 33 years old. Bottas is presently trying to improve the prospects of the Swiss team before it becomes an Audi works team in 2026.

The Mexican driver made his debut in Formula 1 in 2011. Sergio Perez is 33 years old. Checo was born on January 26, 1990. Perez spent several seasons in the F1 midfield before getting the call-up to join Red Bull Racing. He is a title challenge against his teammate Max Verstappen after spending two seasons as the Austrian team’s No:2 driver.

Kevin Magnussen – 30 years old

Magnussen made an unlikely return to the sport in 2022 to replace Nikita Mazepin. Kevin Magnussen shocked the paddock with a surprise pole position at the 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix. The Haas driver is 30 years old and was born on October 5, 1992. The Dane had a reputation for having some mishaps during races previously. 

Carlos Sainz – 28 years old

The Spanish driver comes from a racing family, with their father, Carlos Sainz Sr., being a renowned rally driver. Carlos Sainz was born on September 1, 1994, and is 28 years old. The Ferrari driver won his first Grand Prix at Silverstone in 2022. Sainz hopes to match his teammate Charles Leclerc after an underwhelming 2022 F1 season.

Nyck de Vries – 28 years old

Nyck de Vries

de Vries showcased his talent at the 2022 Italian Grand Prix. He scored points for Williams in place of Alex Albon. He will race in Formula 1 with Alpha Tauri in 2023. Nyck De Vries was born on February 6, 1995, and is 28 years old. Nyck has won the Formula 2 championship and the Formula E world title.

Pierre Gasly – 27 years old

Pierre Gasly

Gasly was part of the Red Bull Racing driver’s development program. Gasly moved to Alpine for the 2023 season after exhausting his options for the energy drinks giant. Pierre Gasly is 27 years old. The French driver was born on February 7, 1996. Gasly hopes to finally get the chance to prove his talent at a competitive team this season.

Alex Albon – 26 years old

The former Red Bull driver has strengthened his ties with Williams Racing. Albon will continue with the Grove-based team for the foreseeable future. The Thai driver is 26 years old and was born on March 23, 1996. The Williams driver delivered decent results in the 2022 season as he outperformed then-teammate Nicholas Latifi from the get-go.

The Frenchman made a mark on the sport during his time at Force India. Later, Ocon became a main player at Alpine. Esteban Ocon was born on September 17, 1996, and is 26 years old. The Alpine driver made his way into Formula 1 through his talent and support from junior academies. Esteban won the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen – 25 years old

The Two times Formula 1 world champion is the youngest driver to make a debut in the sport. Max Verstappen was born on September 30, 1997, and is 25 years old. The Dutchman is also the son of former F1 driver Jos Verstappen. In 2023, the 25-year-old will aim to defend his title for a second year in a row with Red Bull promising RB-19.

Charles Leclerc – 25 years old

The runner-up in the 2022 F1 championship, Charles Leclerc, is 25 years old. Yet, this young age has not stopped the Monegasque driver from becoming a mainstay at Scuderia Ferrari. Charles holds the record of having the longest contract for the Scuderia. Leclerc was born on October 16, 1997. He is 25 years old.

George Russell – 25 years old

Russell got the call-up to race for Mercedes in 2022.  George Russell is 25 years old and was born on February 15, 1998. George is seen as the future of Mercedes in Formula 1 after Lewis Hamilton inevitably retires from the sport. The 25-year-old won the German team’s only win of the 2022 season at the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Lance Stroll – 24 years old

Stroll currently races for the Aston Martin F1 team, owned by a consortium led by his father, Lawrence Stroll. The Canadian driver has shown promise in Formula 1 after securing a pole position at the Turkish Grand Prix in 2020. Lance was born on October 29, 1998, and is 24 years old. It remains to be seen whether Stroll can match his new teammate Fernando Alonso at the Silverstone-based team.

Zhou Guanyu – 23 years old

Zhou Guanyu is the first Chinese driver to race in Formula 1. Guanyu was born on May 30, 1999. One of the newer talents in the sport, the 23-year-old impressed the paddock in his rookie season at Alfa Romeo. The Chinese driver is also a popular figure off-track. 

Lando Norris – 23 years old

McLaren supported Norris throughout his junior career. The British driver didn’t disappoint the Woking-based team with his outstanding performances. Lando Norris was born on November 13, 1999, and is 23 years old. Norris is considered a potential future world champion by many in the paddock, as he obliterated Daniel Ricciardo as a teammate previously.

Yuki Tsunoda – 22 years old

The only Japanese driver on the grid since 2021 and the first F1 driver to be born in the twenty-first century, Yuki Tsunoda was born on May 11, 2000. Subsequently, Tsunoda was. Yuki is 22 years old. Pressure is on the shoulders of the Japanese driver this year. Alpha Tauri needs the 22-year-old to deliver consistent results this season if he wants to continue at the Red Bull sister team.

Sargeant got the surprise opportunity to race for Williams in F1 this season. Logan Sargeant is the first American driver on the grid since Alexander Rossi in 2015. The British team plans to exploit this factor to gain traction in the United States, a country booming with popularity for Formula 1.  Sargeant was born on 31 December 2000 and is 22 years old.

Oscar Piastri – 21 years old

Piastri is perhaps the most highly anticipated rookie Formula 1 has seen in years after a widely successful junior career. The Australian driver rejected Alpine for his F1 debut and signed for McLaren in 2022. The former Formula 2 champion was born on 6, April 2001. Making him one of the three F1 drivers to be born in the twenty-first century. Oscar Piastri is 21 years old.

Thus that is the list of all the drivers’ ages on the 2023 Formula 1 grid. The sport continues to have veteran drivers in the form of Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton. However, the majority of the drivers are younger than the age of 30. This is an indication of the new dawn in the sport, where fans will see new rivalries and champions in the decade to come.
