At the core of each collection are "hero pieces," as Lewis calls them, which are "classics that have established themselves to withstand the test of time." [Fittingly, the name Goat is a tribute to where cashmere comes from.] Lewis mentioned their "Lola" dress, a versatile tunic style you could imagine falling back on every time you don't know what to wear to work...or a party. "I road tested the first sample we made in apple green, and I still wear it now. Even though we've made thousands of them and I have it in many colors, I still love that first dress hot off the press."
Royals aside, Lewis herself just might be the best ambassador for Goat. She showed up to our appointment looking confident and comfortable in a chartreuse silk tie-neck blouse, her faithful gold hoops, and ultra-slimming, leg-lengthening flares in deep forest green. The day before, Lewis was rocking one of her tailored boiler room suits during sales appointments, and was happy to report "every single buyer bought one for herself. Do you know why they want it? It's the tiniest details."
Everything is reasonably priced, especially considering these are the kind of go-to items you wear repeatedly—the first thing you pull out of your dry cleaning when you get it back. "People always say, Oh, I'm designing clothes for women,' but I really feel we do because we're a company of women making clothes for women," says Lewis.
As for her take on style in the U.S. vs the U.K.? "I think Americans are very polished and there's a strong work ethic here, and that sense of work hard, play hard, pounding the streets that's very practical in a way," says Lewis. "In London it's more about street style and possibly more experimental, but it depends on where you're working. Everywhere you go, I think you can be stylish and powerful and use your clothes as a tool and a comfort."
The collection is available at the brand's site, GoatFashion.com and Saks Fifth Avenue. And while prices average at about $650 for a dress, it's an investment worth considering, seeing the gorgeous quality and classic silhouettes, allowing for* lots *of re-wear.
