Enter the catacombs and turn left. A Skeleton will prop up. When you kill the Skeleton, take note of your soul count. If it doesn’t increase, then the Skeleton will jump up a second time. Kill it again, and it should stay down, allowing you to collect the two Carthus Rouge behind it.

At the end of the bridge, will be a Skeleton Swordsman. Lure it over with your bow to kill it, and then head to the other side of the bridge to be attacked by two more Skeletons, as well as an archer Skeleton on a ledge above you.

When you can, head through the doorway and up the stairs ahead, killing more Skeletons along the way. Turn right at the top to find a Soul of a Nameless Soldier behind some more Skeletons.

Go back down the stairs, and on the side of the room, look down to see two Swordsman. Use your bow to fight them individually, and then head downstairs (two Skeletons pop up as you do). Down a path behind the stairs will be two Titanite Shards.

Head back upstairs and out onto the bridge. On your right as you exit, you will see a platform below you. Drop down to it and kill the Skeleton that rises, and then head inside with your shield up as a Skeleton attacks from the right. When it’s safe, you can pick up the Carthus Pyromancy Tome.

NG++ When you drop down to the platform from the bridge, be sure to land on the pillar to the right with a corpse on it to get the Ring of Steel Protection+2 (Checklist Ring 98/107)

Head down the tunnel the second Skeleton came out from, and attack the wall at the end to head through. To your right will be another Skeleton Swordsman. Kill it and collect a Sharp Gem.

Go left from where you left the tunnel into a room with a Soul of a Nameless Soldier, and then take the ladder up. Avoid stepping on the pressure plate here as it activates a trap. Continue into the familiar room and go back down the stairs where the two Swordsmen were.

Head through the door to your left where four Skeletons will attack. Once all are dead, continue down some stairs to find Anri of Astora. Speak to her to learn she has lost Horace and will ask if you have seen him. As you haven’t, say No, and she will ask you to give him a message.

Step out through the door just after Anri to find a Crystal Lizard on your left that gives Twinkling Titanite and a corpse on the right with the Bloodred Moss Clumps. However, watch for an archer Skeleton on the left side of the room.

Head back through again to where the two Swordsman were, and approach the other door. Ahead of you is a staircase. As you walk onto it, a boulder composed of bones and skeletons is going to roll down towards you. You need to sprint down the staircase and into the door at the bottom and duck in to the left as the ball rolls past into a wall and then back up the stairs.

Across from you on the other side of the door is a Skeleton wearing a hat. This guy is controlling the boulder. When it’s clear, kill the Skeleton, and the next time the boulder hits the wall, it will shatter, leaving behind an Undead Bone Shard for you to pick up.

Head around the corner now where three Skeletons will pop up. You need to be careful of the one that backs away, as it will throw bombs at you that release homing dark magic on impact. Kill all three and then go around the next corner where another bomb Skeleton attacks.

On your right is an area filled with urns. Watch for the smaller ones that have the tops closed over. If these break, they will release the same dark magic the Skeletons are using. Carefully make your way to the back to get the Carthus Milkring (Checklist Ring 23/107).

NG+ In the same area the Carthus Milkring is located, you can also find the Thunder Stoneplate Ring+1 (Checklist Ring 79/107)

Go back to the main path and continue on while watching the right where you will see another Swordsman. Lure it over to kill it (this one needs to be killed twice) and then go where it was waiting to find a regular Skeleton.

Down the path on the right will be two more Skeleton Swordsmen. Fight them one at a time, and then collect the Large Soul of an Unknown Traveler propped up beside a trap switch. Move ahead and go around the hole in the floor to get an Ember.

Head through the door here, being careful as you reach the end of the tunnel, as another bone boulder will pass by. Run left to quickly grab a Large Titanite Shard before going the other way and left to find the next bonfire.

Go back to where the boulder passes, and look around the corner to the left. You will see it pass through a doorway down some stairs. When the boulder comes back past you, run down the stairs into a sewer area where you will be attacked by a few Hound-Rats.

Head right, and on your left will be a Giant Hound-Rat behind a pillar. Kill this before continuing around the corner.

Far ahead of you will be four Skeleton Wheels, two on each side of the pillars down the centre. Try to hit them with your bow, but it may not work just yet. If not, slowly move towards them. As you do, keep an eye on the roof, as the Writhing Rotten Flesh enemies from the Cathedral are waiting to drop down on you. As before, use magic or firebombs to take them out.

When you think you are close enough, use your bow on the Skeleton Wheels. When they get close, they will spin along the ground at you, but this is easy to block or avoid so long as there’s just one or two of them.

When the coast is clear, you can pick up two Titanite Shards along the corridor. Around the corner will be a Carthus Bloodring.

Return to where the Giant Hound-Rat was, and enter the door next to it. In the room, you will find an Ember and will be invaded by Knight Slayer Tsorig. When facing Tsorig for the first time, watch his attack patterns as he is very powerful. The two most important things to do here are to not let your stamina empty from attacking and to not get close enough for him to kick you. If Tsorig kicks you and gets a riposte, you will likely be killed instantly. If not, you will have just a slither of health remaining.

Stay back from Tsorig and watch for two attacks when he is two-handing his weapon. When he performs an overhead slam followed with a lunge and lifting his sword to slash, he has a brief moment where he can be hit once or twice. The second is a leaping slam attack. When he does this, it is easy to quickly rush behind for a backstab.

Another possible method is to lure him into the path of the bone boulder and let that deal the damage for you. Whatever you choose to do, you will get the Knight Slayer’s Ring when he is defeated, he will also give you the My Thanks Gesture (Checklist Gesture 20/26).

From the door the boulder comes in, go to the left to fight a Grave Warden Skeleton. Once it's, dead you can pick up two Titanite Shards and then go through the doorway with stairs leading up.

Carefully approach the top of the stairs to get a glimpse of the situation ahead. On the right just outside the stairs is the Skeleton controlling the boulder. At the back of the room is a Skeleton Swordsman archer shooting explosive arrows, and on the left is a Grave Warden Skeleton that dual-wields two Shotels. Use your bow to poke out and get the attention of the Warden. Bring him back downstairs to kill him a bit easier.

Go back up the stairs where you can and bait an arrow from the archer. As soon as it misses, rush out to kill the Skeleton, and then rush the archer to kill it. Then search a corpse on its right for some Carthus Rouge (watch the trap switch nearby).

At the other end of the upstairs area will be another Warden patrolling. Kill him twice (it respawns) and then collect a Large Titanite Shard and the Grave Warden’s Ashes. Head down the nearby stairs and attack the wall at the bottom to return to the sewer below.

Turn right and through a third doorway into a cave area. You should see a Crystal Lizard ahead. Kiill it before it goes too far for a Fire Gem, and then look out to see a Skeleton Swordsman on a cliff. If you are careful, you can sneak up for a backstab to push it off the cliff. On your left will be three Yellow Bug Pellets.

Head through the nearby door into an area with bones everywhere. Two Skeletons will rise as you enter. Kill them, and you can collect a Large Soul of a Nameless Soldier and two Black Bug Pellets.

Approach the bridge and make a right to find a path leading up. At the end, you will find Anri of Astora. Speak with Anri to find she is still searching for Horace. Again, say 'No' when asked and exhaust her dialogue.

Head back to the bridge and sprint across. On the other side, look back to see a horde of Skeletons coming toward you. Attack the sides of the bridge causing it to collapse.

Climb down the ladder that the broken bridge has now become. At the bottom, you can look down into the pit to see Horace.

Follow the path, and in the next room, you will see a Demon similar to the one you killed in the Undead Settlement. You can fight it normally, but there is another fun way. Along the ledge on the other side of the room, you should be able to see a chest. This is actually a Mimic.

Run over and attack the Mimic, and then drop down to the Demon. The Mimic will follow you, and a few Skeletons will likely spawn as well. Run up the nearby stairs, and the Mimic and Skeletons should aggro against the Demon. There is a good chance they will kill it, but if not, you should have an easier time finishing it off.

When the Demon dies, you will get the Soul of a Demon, as well as the Black Blade from the corpse of the Mimic. In the lower area will be two more corpses surrounded by Skeletons that will spawn when you get close. Every Skeleton here will need to be killed twice. When they are all dead, you can get a Large Titanite Shard and a Large Soul of a Nameless Soldier.

Go through the next door, and at the end of the hallway, collect the Old Sage’s Blindfold and the Witch’s Ring. Then head through the door to find a bonfire.

Warp to Firelink. You can give the Shrine Handmaiden the Grave Warden’s Ashes to expand her stock. Then go visit Cornyx and hand over the Carthus Tome to unlock three more spells, allowing you to buy Acid Surge, Carthus Beacon, and Carthus Flame Arc for a total of 24,000 souls (Checklist Pyromancies 10-12/27).

When you’re ready, warp back to the Catacombs of Carthus bonfire, and make your way back to the bridge. Head over to the other side and cut if down again then proceed up some stairs into a door.

Heal up, and when you’re ready, interact with the goblet resting in front of you. This will trigger a cutscene transporting you to the boss.

High Lord Wolnir

Before the fight starts, rush forwards to get the Grave Warden Pyromancy Tome. Wolnir will soon appear before you. Wolnir is a bit of a mixed bag. Some seem to have trouble with him while others find him to be a very quick fight. On each of Wolnir’s arms, you should see two gold bangles. These are your target. Attack each bangle, and after they sustain enough damage, they will shatter, dealing massive damage to Wolnir. Speed is the key as the fight will get tougher the longer it lasts.

Wolnir mostly employs swipe and slam attacks. You must try to stay close. Otherwise, Wolnir will climb up the hill and eventually pin you up against a wall if you take a ranged approach. Wolnir’s most devastating attack comes when he uses a breath attack. This stuff will kill you in seconds, so run away when you see it coming.

Once the fight has gone for too long, Wolnir will begin summoning Skeletons to aid him. A little later, Skeleton Wheels will also be added to the mix. The last addition to the fight will come when Wolnir raises a hand over the ground and produces a sword. This will likely kill you if the fight goes this long. Try to aim for those bangles and destroy them as fast as possible. If you are quick, you should be able to destroy all of them before having to deal with a single Skeleton.

Once Wolnir is defeated, you will get the Soul of High Lord Wolnir and unlock:

You will then return to the room you touched the goblet in, and a door ahead will open. Instead of going through, use a Homeward Bone to warp back to Firelink.

Speak to Ludleth to trade Wolnir’s Soul for the Black Serpent Pyromancy (Checklist Pyromancy 13/27) and then level up as you like. Use the bonfire to then warp to the Abandoned Tomb, and head through the door into another cavern. When you reach the other end, you will enter Smouldering Lake.
