How To Defeat Akashic Morbol

In the realm of Final Fantasy games, one creature stands out as one of the most devastating: the Malboro. This tentacled mass of filth is renowned for wiping parties with its combination of Bad Breath and critical stopping power. Final Fantasy 16 features a few Morbols as bosses, replete with status effect-loaded attacks and enough power to worsen Clive’s day. With the newly implemented action RPG system, however, Clive has at his disposal what most heroes before him did not: the ability to move out of Bad Breath.

Still, when Clive and Jill assault Drake’s Breath in order to destroy the Mothercrystal and allow Jill to find some closure from her past traumas and sins, they come face-to-face with an Akashic Morbol. This is the first boss fight in the Drake’s Breath invasion, but the beast’s oversaturation of aether makes it no breezy battle.
How To Beat Akashic Morbol
You will stumble across the Akashic Morbol early into Clive’s attack on the Drake’s Breath Mothercrystal.It will be located in the center of an area flooded with water with a small island of grass in the middle. That grass, however, is the buried Morbol, and it pounces as soon as Clive, Jill, and Torgal enter its domain.
The battle against the Akashic Morbol is very similar to the battle with the Morbol in Clive’s flashback at the beginning of the game. It will swing its tentacles at Clive in a sweeping motion, and with so many flailing limbs, it is able to attack Clive from any direction. This provides a very easy opportunity to perform perfect dodges and strong counters to chip away at its stagger bar and health. Work on staggering the Akashic Morbol with a combination of your Eikonic abilities. Ramuh’s Pile Drive will deal massive chunks of stagger bar damage, so utilize that as often as you can to drop the Morbol quickly.
One of the most obnoxious attacks the Morbol will employ is launching numerous tentacles from the ground around the map. He will often pair this with Acid Rain and leave black puddles of damaging liquid around the arena. Clive will need to continuously dodge the tentacles while avoiding the goo to avoid taking any serious damage.

Akashic Morbol's Most Dangerous Attacks
- Worse Breath: While the Morbol in Clive’s flashback spewed Bad Breath, a debilitating spread of toxic air molecules, the Akashic Morbol vomits Worse Breath. Getting caught up in Worse Breath will stun Clive for what feels like a painstakingly long time. This is not a particularly difficult attack to avoid if the player is paying attention, as the Akashic Morbol announces it will be using Worse Breath, but the cloud of poison spans a large breadth of the arena, so Clive will need to continue running a circle around the Morbol to avoid the attack. When Clive appears to have enough room between himself and the attack, smack the back of the Morbol with his best Eikonic abilities to deplete that stagger bar.
- Acid Rain: The more annoying of the Akashic Morbol’s attacks, Acid Rain will drop the aforementioned black liquid onto the arena. In this iteration of the black ooze attack, Clive can be damaged both by the falling rain and goo on the ground. The Akashic Morbol pairs this with his tentacle attack, making for a complex obstacle course for Clive to navigate.
- Giant Leap: The last named attack the Akashic Morbol will try to kill Clive with is Giant Leap. The Morbol will catapult itself into the air and slam into the ground, sending a shockwave AoE attack in its landing vicinity. Clive should see this coming, so he can either run out of the spot the Morbol will likely land, thus avoiding the splash damage, or he can time a perfect dodge and smack the Morbol for extra damage. Like many of the AoE smashes and shock waves, the attack is not the easiest to dodge, but perfect dodge counters are always a boon in combat.
Well-timed dodges and Eikonic ability use will see the Akashic Morbol staggered and felled with little trouble. So long as Clive avoids Worse Breath, the only real threats are from Giant Leap’s shockwave and the Acid Rain and tentacle combination. With Clive’s quick moves, he should have little problem avoiding serious damage on his way to eliminating another akashic foe.
