Jake Gyllenhaal’s upcoming movie has failed to get a theatrical release. The upcoming Road House is an official remake of the 1989 Patrick Swayze movie of the same name. Reportedly, despite earning a very positive response from the test screenings, Amazon Studios is hellbent to release the movie on their streaming platform.

If the latest reports are to be believed then the movie is currently going through a lot of off-stage drama. Jake Gyllenhaal and director Doug Liman are unhappy with Amazon’s decision and have tried their best to convince them for a theatrical release. The movie has been one of the most controversial ones after the firing of producer Joel Silver and the allegations of AI use.

Jake Gyllenhaal went to great heights to get a theatrical release for Road House

Even though 1989’s Road House wasn’t a critical success, it made a name in its home video and cable TV release. The remake of the Patrick Swayze movie stars Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead as a former UFC fighter alongside real-life UFC star Conor McGregor and many others. However, the Spider-Man: Far From Home actor wanted the movie to get a theatrical release.

According to Puck News, Jake Gyllenhaal and the director Doug Liman were “pissed” at Amazon’s decision and also hoped they revise their decision. They even tried as hard as screening the movie on Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’ yacht but still, they could not change the producers’ minds.

After failing to convince Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke, Gyllenhaal’s reps and director Doug Liman thought arranging a screening for Jeff Bezos could give them an upper hand.

“They convinced Jeff Bezos to screen the film on his yacht, with the hope that Bezos would love it and push for theaters. Salke knew it was happening, and it didn’t change her mind, but an A+ effort.”

It is said that Road House has received Liman’s career’s best test screening response which led the director and his team to emphasize theatrical release so much. The director has also delivered commendable projects like The Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and Edge of Tomorrow.

Did Amazon use the help of AI to complete the Road House remake?

It was not only Jake Gyllenhaal and Doug Liman who were rallying for the movie to get a theatrical release. Former producer Joel Silver was also an active part of the campaign before being fired from the movie for controversial reasons. Although it was alleged that Silver was fired because of “verbal abuse” to two female executives, sources close to him have completely denied the claims.

As per Variety, Joel Silver has been fired from numerous Amazon projects due to allegations of verbal abuse. Even though he has fulfilled his commitments for Road House, he also exited the film. Now sources close to him state that he was not fired due to any allegation but for his concern over the reported use of Artificial Intelligence by Amazon to complete the movie.

According to reports, the movie was almost complete when the SAG-AFTRA strike took place and following that, Amazon reportedly used AI to finish the movie. However, Amazon has denied the claims. If they don’t change their minds, we can expect Road House to come to Prime Video, sometime in early 2024.
