New Zealand had a horrible start to their innings when they lost three top-order batters for just mere runs. But no Sri Lankan bowlers could themselves from Glenn Phillips’ onslaught as he went on to smash a phenomenal ton at the SCG in Sydney on Saturday [October 29].

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson won the toss and opted to bat first. But to the Kiwis’ surprise, their score looked 15/3 in 3.6 overs and then entered Phillips. He didn’t depart easily; he played just 64 balls to score a sensational century that was studded with 10 boundaries and four maximums at an impressive strike rate of 162.50.

Sri Lankans couldn’t make use of the advantage they had when they had put the Kiwis in the worst situation during the powerplay. In the final over, Lahiru Kumara could able to get rid of Phillips but the latter had already done the damage.

On the fourth ball of the last over, Lahiru bowled into the pitch outside off and Phillips lost his shape as he looked to go over the long off fence. The ball went off the top edge and just over mid-off and the Lankan skipper, Dasun Shanaka, ran backward and grabbed the easy catch.

Apart from Phillips, Daryl Mitchell scored 22 runs off 24 balls. Mitchell Santner added 11 runs off five balls with a six in the last overs to guide the Blackcaps to a competitive total of 167/7 in their allotted 20 overs.

Coming to Phillips’ ton, he achieved some special feats. His score is the second-highest amongst the Kiwis in a T20 World Cup. He also became the first No.4 batter to score a ton in a T20 World Cup.

New Zealand 15/3 after 4 overs
Then 45/3 from 9 overs
Yet they finish on 167/7

Could Pakistan have achieved this total after being 15/3? No chance#T20WorldCup #Cricket

– Scored 66% of the runs New Zealand scored off the bat
– The second highest score by a New Zealander at a men's T20 World Cup
– The first hundred scored by a No. 4 or below in a men's T20 World Cup

A special, special innings from Glenn Phillips.#T20WorldCup

Looks like Glenn Phillips learnt more than a thing or two from playing for the Jamaica Tallawahs in the home of Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake amongst others 🏃🏿‍♂️🏃🏿‍♂️🤣.

That is terrific from Glenn Phillips. 103 out of 152 runs. He has grown into an amazing batter. Can’t wait to see what he does in the fields tonight.

Glenn Phillips currently has the best celebration of a catch and the best celebration of a century in this World Cup. His five-fer next game better live up to expectation

Glenn Phillips has a sizeable weakness v high pace and the short ball. Kumara is one of the fastest bowlers in the world; 7 of his 8 balls to Phillips have been below 140kph.

Been a great knock, but SL have let Phillips him off the hook – and not just in the field.#T20WorldCup

Sri lanka’s fielding today most atrocious seen so far this tournament. Could lose match for this

— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) October 29, 2022

That is a sensational power play for Sri Lanka. Very clever to take pace off early on against Finn Allen and Devon Conway. They can't afford to let NZ get away by dropping catches now. Both, England and Australia watching very closely!!

Superb century by Glen Philip. One man show in the Kiwi innings. Sri lanka will be ruing the dolly catch put down before he had settled in

— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) October 29, 2022

That was a wonderful innings from Glenn Phillips who is such a powerhouse of energy. But Sri Lanka should have had him early. Their fielding has been so disappointing. And now they have lost too many. Fear it might be game over.

From 15-3 off 4 overs, what an innings from Glenn Phillips for New Zealand against Sri Lanka.

Always been a very exciting player, but – aged 25 – this tournament feels like his time to go to another level

Is the Sri Lanka National Anthem the longest in the world?
Some people can’t remember 1 verse of the English and don’t know the second! 😂 great effort!
