For the longest time I thought green and buff was the original but I don't know if I had actually seen a color photo of the original or if I just pictured it that way based on the black and white photos.

Not every pic in MR made it into the book and then there was RMC. It's possible you did see it that way. And some folks seem to be following that scheme, suggesting it's more than just you. But that really proves nothing without an actual source pic to reference. The hunt continues.

I'm almost inspired enough to comb through my MR collection, but a little too busy right now, but will follow along. My RMC collection is rather thin in those years, but he was definitely there, too. Until that era when he died, often the only full color in many mags was on the cover. Maybe we could establish when that happened with both mags? It was pretty early with MR (pre-1960 IIRC?), not really sure about RMC. That way you could speed things up by just looking at covers when it wouldn't matter that everything in between was B&W.
