SARASOTA, FLA. -- Sarasota Police Department are warning people about a Craigslist scam involving vehicles being sold.
The vehicles being sold are through car dealerships and not online. Scammers are using these pictures and making up stories about why the vehicle is being sold for such a good deal. The scammer asks the victim to deposit or send money via MoneyGram to an account. The victim is instructed to make the deposit or send the MoneyGram and Google Wallet will hold the money until the vehicle is delivered. Police have three reported cases referencing this scam.
Google Wallet has no knowledge of this deal taking place. The scammer is using fake names, phone numbers, emails, and addresses using the transaction process.
When the money is received, all numbers and email accounts become inactivated.
Police are urging people to share this information with their friends and family warning them of this crime trend.
