Scott Davidson was a firefighter who tragically lost his life during the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City. He was a member of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY).

Davidson was born in Brooklyn, New York on January 4, 1968. When he was two years old, his family relocated to Staten Island. Raised by Steven and Carla Davidson, he and his brother, Michael, explored the borough like two individuals who stumbled upon a treasure chest.

Sports brought Davidson immense joy and excitement. His athletic talents became evident at a young age. During his time in elementary school, he excelled as a baseball player in the Great Kills Little League. Davidson spent four years playing basketball at St. Joseph By-The-Sea High School and was honoured as the “Most Valuable Player” in the Jacques Classic All-Star High School game in 1986.

Despite studying for a bachelor’s degree in History at the College of Staten Island (CSI), Davidson’s unwavering passion for sports remained. He played basketball for the CSI Dolphins and, in 1990, he graduated as the team captain. He was the recipient of the Melvin Barmel Memorial Award and was recognised as CSI’s “Male Athlete of the Year”.

Tony Petosa, the coach of the CSI Dolphins, reminisced about his coaching experience with Davidson during the Big Apple games when Scott was in high school. According to Petosa, both Davidson and Tim Reardon, a teammate of the former, were relentless in their pursuit of loose balls, often diving and colliding with each other in their eagerness.

After completing his undergraduate studies, Davidson obtained a teacher’s license to work as a substitute. However, his true aspiration was to become a firefighter – which he considered the “greatest job in America”. While attending graduate school for teaching, Davidson remained focused on his goal of joining the firefighting profession.

Four months after his wife, Amy, gave birth to their son on November 16, 1993, Davidson successfully passed the firefighter’s exam and joined the New York City Fire Department.

Davidson’s passion for sports continued to thrive. He not only played basketball for the Fire Department and Jewish Community Center leagues but also ventured into coaching and refereeing. At St. Clare’s School, he coached the intramural and CYO programs, all while actively participating in basketball.

Steven Davidson, Davidson’s father, described him as a true team player who fearlessly excelled in his defensive play. Davidson was recognised for going the extra mile in his dedication to the sport.

Following his high school education, Davidson enrolled at St. Francis College located in Brooklyn Heights. However, after completing just one semester, he decided to fully commit to a career in comedy. At the age of 16, Davidson had his first experience with stand-up comedy in a bowling alley on Staten Island. Encouraged by his friends, including future professional baseball player, Matthew Festa, who was aware of his comedic ambitions, he took on the challenge of performing on stage.

In the early 2010s, Davidson kickstarted his career with guest roles on various television shows, including “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”, “Friends of the People”, “Guy Code” and “Wild ‘n Out.” He released his comedy specials: “Pete Davidson: SMD” in 2016, and “Pete Davidson: Alive from New York” in 2020.

Davidson ventured into the world of film, both as an actor and a producer. He starred in and served as an executive producer for the comedy film, “Big Time Adolescence” in 2019. Additionally, he co-wrote and starred in the semi-autobiographical comedy-drama film, “The King of Staten Island”, in 2020. Furthermore, Davidson has been involved in projects like the Peacock series “Bupkis” (2023).

He has appeared in films such as “The Suicide Squad” (2021), “Bodies Bodies Bodies” (2022), “Meet Cute” (2022), and has upcoming roles in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” (2023) and “Fast X” (2023).

At the age of 17 or 18, Pete Davidson was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, a chronic inflammatory bowel disease. To manage the condition, he receives intravenous biologic therapy. Additionally, he uses medical marijuana both for pain management related to his condition and recreationally.

On March 6, 2017, Davidson announced on his Instagram account that he had quit drugs and was sober for the first time in eight years. However, in a later interview on Marc Maron’s podcast, he clarified that the only drug he used was marijuana. He mentioned that he has significantly reduced his marijuana usage but realised that the personal and emotional challenges he initially attributed to marijuana use were linked to his newly diagnosed borderline personality disorder. He has since sought treatment for this condition.

On December 3, 2018, Davidson posted a candid message on Instagram expressing thoughts of suicide. Following this, he deleted his Instagram account. Concerned followers and his former fiancée Ariana Grande contacted the New York Police Department, prompting a wellness check on Davidson’s well-being.

Regarding his father’s death, Davidson later expressed that he was grateful his father passed away when he was young because he did not fully comprehend the magnitude of the tragedy. He, however, took on the responsibility of supporting his mother, who worked as a school nurse and helped her with the financial burdens they faced.

Scott Davidson died while saving lives during the 9/11 incident. As a firefighter, he had gained extensive experience and was stationed at Ladder Company 118 in Brooklyn Heights.

On that tragic morning of September 11, 2001, Davidson was on duty with Ladder Company 118 when the devastating events unfolded. At 8:46 a.m., the first plane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Shortly after, at around 9:03 a.m., when the second plane struck the South Tower, the company received an urgent call to respond to the scene.

In a race against time, the members of Ladder 118 hurriedly made their way across the Brooklyn Bridge, unaware that their fateful assignment would be their last. Upon their arrival at the World Trade Center, the members of Ladder Company 118, including Scott Davidson, parked their fire truck at West and Vesey Streets. They then disappeared into the dense, smoke-filled air, obscured by ash and debris.

Once they had parked, the firefighters were immediately instructed to assist in the evacuation of the Marriott World Trade Center, a hotel situated between the North and South Towers. Their brave efforts saved the lives of approximately 200 individuals, who would have, otherwise, been trapped in the wreckage when the North Tower ultimately collapsed onto the hotel at 10:28 a.m.

A photographer positioned on a nearby rooftop captured an image of their fire truck during this journey. Tragically, all six men aboard the truck lost their lives that day. The photograph, titled: “The Last Run of Ladder 118”, was published on the front page of The Daily News.

In the aftermath of 9/11, the entire world mourned, but those who had lost loved ones in the attacks experienced profound grief.
