LOS ANGELES (AP) — Three UCLA basketball players detained in China on suspicion of shoplifting are on a plane back to Los Angeles. Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said Tuesday the matter "has been resolved to the satisfaction of the Chinese authorities." There was no immediate word on the players' status for the team's home opener tomorrow night against Central Arkansas.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Vice President Mike Pence's attendance at an NFL game that he quickly left after a national anthem protest cost Indianapolis about $14,000 in police overtime and other costs. The figures were released today by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. The left-leaning policy group sought details about expenses surrounding Pence's Oct. 8 trip. It found that the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department's costs included nearly $11,500 in overtime for tactical and traffic officers.
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Liberty are for sale. One of the WNBA's original franchises, the Liberty have been owned by James Dolan and Madison Square Garden since the league was founded in 1996 and started play the next year. This is the second WNBA franchise to put up for sale in the past few months. San Antonio was bought by MGM Resorts International and the team was moved to Las Vegas.
DUBLIN (AP) — Denmark qualified for next year's World Cup after Christian Eriksen scored a superb hat trick in a 5-1 victory over Ireland in their playoff today. Ireland made an ideal start by taking the lead in the sixth minute through defender Shane Duffy. But Denmark's players gradually took control in midfield and they were rewarded when Andreas Christiensen's effort went into the net off Ireland's Cyrus Christie in the 29th minute.
GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) — Bobby Doerr (dohr), the Hall of Fame second baseman dubbed the "Silent Captain" of the Boston Red Sox by longtime teammate and friend Ted Williams, has died. He was 99. The Red Sox said that Doerr died yesterday in Junction City, Oregon. The Red Sox said Doerr had been the oldest living major league player.
