This tragic event unfolded during the ongoing protests which had entered their third week. These protests had been sparked by the ratification of a highly contentious mining contract, granting Canada-based First Quantum Minerals permission to extend their operations at Panama’s largest pit copper mine for an additional 20 years.

Based on information from a Facebook profile believed to belong to the suspect, Kenneth Darlington had pursued studies at Florida State University and Isae Universidad Panama. He had been employed as a university teacher.

Additionally, a social media user named Rob Brown who is associated with the founder of the International Film Festival Panama, alleged that the suspect was involved with a law firm called Mossack Darlington & Associates in Panama.

In response to the tragic incident, Panama President Laurentino Cortizo conveyed his condolences to the families of the two citizens who lost their lives in this violent episode. The nation’s leader expressed his sympathies for the devastating loss experienced by the victims’ families.

The concerned protestors firmly believed that the mining contract posed substantial environmental risks had taken a resolute stance. They effectively blocked the Pan-American Highway, located in Chame, a town situated approximately 51 miles from Panama City, the capital.

This act of civil disobedience was a response to their concerns about the potential consequences of the contract and served as a symbol of their determination to draw attention to the environmental issues at stake.

Following the unsettling incident, numerous unverified reports have surfaced, suggesting that Kenneth Darlington may potentially face house arrest as a consequence of his advanced age. These reports have triggered a wave of public outrage, particularly in light of Darlington’s criminal history dating back to 2005.

In 2005, Professor Kenneth Darlington found himself under arrest after a raid on an apartment in Paitilla. The arrest was made in connection with his possession of various assault weapons, which included two M-1 rifles and an AK-47. At the time, the 77-year-old was released on bail, asserting that these war weapons were part of a collection.

Moreover, there were reports linking Darlington to financier Marc Harris who faced convictions for money laundering in the United States. These revelations regarding Darlington’s past have further intensified discussions about the appropriate legal consequences of his current situation.
