World No. 17 Elena Rybakina has had a great season so far having started the season by reaching the final of the Adelaide International 1losing to fellow Australian Ashleigh Barty in straight sets. Rybakina faced Coco Vandewegh in the first round and beat her comfortably in straight sets. She then beat Bianca Andreescu in the seond round tie in same fashion and with ease. She then faced Zheng Qinwen in the third round tie and it was nothing but a straight sets comfortable win for Elena. She then triumphed over Petra Martic in a 7-5, 6-3 win to progress to the quarterfinals.
On the other hand, Ajla Tomljanovic has had a decent season winnning 19 out of the 35 matches she had played so far this season. She played Jill Teichmann in the first round of Wimbledon and then followed that up with a comfortable win over Catherine Harrison in the second round. Then she faced a tough test against Barbora Krejcikova and had to come back from a set down to win the match. In the fourth round, Ajla faced the French star Alize Cornet who shocked the world by beating World No. 1 and the ultimate fan-favorite and Ajla beat her again in fine fashion despite falling behind in the first set. Tomljanovic won the match win a impressive 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win and qualified for the quarterfinals of Wimbledon yet again after last year.
Rybakina has beaten Tomljanovic in the only match they have played against each other at the 2021 Madrid Open.
