Justin Thomas seems worn down by the LIV Golf saga. US PGA champion Thomas, 29, has rebuffed the Saudi-backed tour’s outrageous fees. Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, and Bryson DeChambeau have defected from the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome. Talor Gooch, Hudson Swafford, and Matt Jones lost their legal challenge to compete in the FedEx playoffs. The judge accused the trio of hypocrisy and asked if they cared about “dust-collecting trophies from a bygone period”.

While that may seem like a minor victory for the status quo, Open Champion Cameron Smith is rumoured to be on the verge of announcing his signing with Greg Norman. The Australian, who was playing alongside Scottie Scheffler this week at the St Jude Championship, was greeted with apparent disdain and has repeatedly refused to dismiss a move.

Thomas has publicly ridiculed the breakaway tour and the idea that LIV Golf’s main goal is to “expand the game.” And now the former world No. 1 has acknowledged he finds it difficult to avoid talking about the controversy. He recently attended a wedding and admitted that in order to avoid being questioned, he had to shoot to the bar.

According to the Daily Mail, he stated, “A couple of weeks ago, I had several pretty close friends getting married. While attending the wedding and reception, I was on my way to the restroom when I was accosted by a man who introduced himself as a fan. Then, all of a sudden, he starts questioning me about that (LIV Golf) and my diversion. I decided I wasn’t in the mood for this right now so I skipped the bathroom and went directly to the bar to order a drink. So, it’s just tiny things like that that you would rather not bring up in conversation.”

Although the Kentucky-born athlete has never publicly criticised people for signing up for LIV Golf, she has recently urged participants to choose a side and stick with it. Defectors can still compete in prestigious championships. “It has always been personal to me, but I would only say that it is becoming deeper and deeper. Like I mentioned at the outset, those guys had the chance to go play and simply play,” he added. “They received their fair share of an enormous amount of cake, but you don’t have to have your cake and eat it too. You don’t need to bring it on our tour; just consume it on your own,” Thomas finished in a funny fashion.
